Biodiversity & Climate Change: The Past & The Future
July 12 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Join DCC for our third Climate Change Education Series as we welcome Brian McGill, Professor of Biological Science from the University of Maine – Orono. Professor McGill studies questions pertaining to biodiversity at large scales – large areas of space, long periods of time, many species.
Most of the newspaper headlines focus on the effects of climate change directly on humans (rising seas, heat waves). But climate change will have large effects on the natural world (and the human maintained outdoor world such as agriculture and forestry). Dr. McGill will start by looking at paleontological evidence of how climate change has affected the natural world in the past. His presentation will combine this knowledge with modern scientific study of the impact of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems to explore what we can expect to see in nature in coming decades and centuries, also exploring how climate change will (and won’t) affect agricultural systems. The presentation will be in Science 102 at the University of Maine – Machias at 6 pm.
