DCC maintains trails for year-round public use throughout coastal Washington County. From classic Downeast rocky beaches to coastal summits and deep forest, DCC has trails for all kinds of enjoyers. However, there is something that only a few preserves can offer in full capacity: a sunset vista. Because Maine and Washington County are on the Atlantic Ocean, facing east, and the sun sets towards the general direction of west, not just any ocean overlook will work for a sunset view. However, because of the intricacy of Downeast Maine’s coastline, filled with bays and peninsulas large and small, some places offer the rare and beautiful combination of an ocean overlook and a sunset view.
1 – Pike Lands Preserve – Lubec
Almost at the end of the North Lubec Road on the North Lubec Peninsula sits Pike Lands Preserve. Consisting of a few miles of trail, with a beautiful shingle beach serving as the highlight at the end of the Huckins Beach Trail. As hikers make their way down towards the beach, they will go through a historic homestead, distinguished by the remnant apple orchard amongst the spruce, fir, and cedar. Once at the beach, visitors will be facing westward, overlooking the southern end of the Cobscook Bay. A sunset here is tranquil, surrounded by the bays and other untouched lands. The only sounds you may encounter will be the waves singing through the rocky beach and possibly the hum of a fishing boat in the distance.
2 – Klondike Mountain Preserve – Lubec
The trailhead, like Pike Lands, is also located on the North Lubec Road, however, it is not nearly as far out onto the peninsula as Pike Lands. With a total of around one mile of trail network, this mountain may not be as mighty as others, but anyone who has been to the top can tell you that this small peak punches above its weight. With multiple viewing areas as the trail snakes up to the peak, visitors can take breaks as they go up the trail and take in the scenery, a beautiful view of an inlet connecting to the greater Cobscook Bay. At the summit, which reaches over 150′, visitors experience a 180-degree viewshed facing northwest. On a clear evening, the sun can be seen setting on the horizon across the inlet, while the moon rises into the darkening sky behind the vista.
3 – Pigeon Hill Preserve – Steuben
The Pigeon Hill Preserve trailhead is located on Pigeon Hill Road in Steuben. Pigeon Hill is one of DCC’s most visited and well-known preserves, and it is for good reason. The preserve features nearly two miles of trail network, and the summit reaches 317′. This makes it one of the highest coastal peaks in Maine, east of Acadia National Park. Because the summit is a large, expansive area of ledge, the viewshed atop Pigeon Hill is nearly 270 degrees. To the east is a view of Bois Bubert Island, the coastline, and other smaller islands. To the south is the Atlantic Ocean and Petit Manan Island and lighthouse. To the west is Dyers Bay, and in the distance, visitors will see the peaks of Acadia National Park. The location and very wide view of the horizon make the summit of Pigeon Hill a must-visit spot and an incredible location to take in a sunset.
