On November 14, Downeast Coastal Conservancy (DCC) and the Maine Tree Farm Program hosted a Tree Farm Walk and Talk at Machias River Preserve. Forester Kyle Burdick led the walk through the preserve as he inspected it for Tree Farm status. Attendees learned about the preserve’s updated forest management plan, what a recognized Tree Farm is, and how to become one. At the end of the walk Kyle approved the preserve for Tree Farm status, and Kayci Willis of Maine Tree presented DCC Board President Robin Pinto and DCC staff with a Tree Farm certification sign to be displayed on the property.
Tree Farm status indicates a commitment to the American Forest Foundation’s Standards of Sustainability and its four pillars: Wood, Water, Recreation, and Wildlife. DCC’s office is the local base for the Downeast Coast Stewardship Hub. For more information about Tree Farm status, visit our office at 6 Colonial Way, Suite 3, Machias, ME 04654.
