Seeing The Forest for the Trees
September 28, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Join us at Pike Lands Preserve for an orchard tour led by Todd Little-Siebold.
This orchard tour will focus on the history of the Radcliffe Pike Arboretum to explain how the site became what is likely the most diverse feral apple forest in North America. By walking the property we will be able to see the historical, botanical and evolutionary processes at work on the landscape that sprang from the hybridization experiments that Pike did on his homestead while he was home from his job as a professor of horticulture at the University of New Hampshire. Because he introduced wild species of apples from around the world onto his personal arboretum, the fruit in the forest, fields and roadsides are amazingly diverse in form, color, taste and their underlying genetics. Come learn about the what, how and why of this amazing feral apple forest.
