Middle River Park

Middle River Park is located conveniently in near downtown Machias adjacent to the confluence of the Machias and Middle Rivers.

Over the centuries, this property was used by settlers for salt hay production and later for raising cattle for the St. Regis Paper Company. DCC acquired this land in 2013 to develop into a public space with the needs of the community at the forefront. Over two miles of interconnecting hiking trails traverse the property and offer a wide variety of habitat perspectives. In the winter, the large hill near the parking area serves as an excellent sledding area. A seasonal dock is also available for launching canoes and kayaks. This park is known for having a considerable deer population which are often seen roaming around the open fields and throughout the forest.

Directions: From Route 1 in Machias, across the street from Helen’s Restaurant, turn onto Kilton Lane. Cross over the Sun-rise Trail and immediately turn left. Take the first right and park in the lot near the large warehouse building. The trails begin atop the field.

Paddlers will find signs directing them to the hand-carry boat launch at the end of the parking area.
