Downeast Coastal Conservancy (DCC) and the Lubec Memorial Library are teaming up to launch a Nature Backpack Program for the local community. This program is aimed at helping the community discover and learn about conservation by encouraging children and families to get outside and explore the region’s natural assets.

Starting February 17th, four different nature themed backpacks will be available. The themes include Birds, Trees & Wildflowers, Animal Tracking, and Insects & Butterflies. Each backpack includes a children’s book, pocket guides, tools for exploration, and family-friendly activity cards. In addition, all four backpacks include a tick ID card, Leave No Trace Ethics Card, and local trail maps.

“This program provides some structure and basic guidance to helps families get outside and explore local preserves around Washington County,” said Cathy Lookabaugh, membership and outreach director for DCC. “Ultimately, we hope to encourage youth wellness through fun outdoor activities”. However, Lookabaugh noted “These nature backpacks are not just for kids. In every pack, users will find field guides perfect for beginners.” For example, the bird themed backpack includes quick reference pocket guides and a bird song guide, that lets users hear different bird calls aloud, helping beginners quickly learn about our local bird species.

The program also looks to encourage users to become citizen scientists. In each backpack, users will find directions on how to utilize the iNaturalist app, on their smartphone or tablet, to track native and invasive species during their exploration process.

The four backpacks filled with gear are available at the Lubec Memorial Library and searchable in their online catalog by the keyword: nature backpacks. “Check one out, just as you would a book, and then get outside to explore,” expressed Lookabaugh. Patrons with a valid library card will be able to check out one of the four backpacks for 14 days. Cards are available free of charge for residents and non-residents at the library. The backpacks can be renewed if there are no reserve requests are waiting to be filled. The backpacks must be returned in person during the library’s operating hours. Fees may be assessed for lost or damaged items.
