An enthusiastic group of runners, walkers and volunteers gathered in early October for the 6th Bad Little Trail Run jointly sponsored by Bold Coast Runners and Downeast Coastal Conservancy at the Machias River Preserve. The weather was sunny but chilly – perfect for a run. Those not jogging nearby to warm up snuggled next to the portable campfire in the Whitneyville parking lot.

The run is a wonderful family event – moms and dads and kids as young as 5-years old and 80-something grandpas – even family dogs ran the trail! A few of the top runners aimed to set a course record. However, most participants came to share a beautiful morning’s exercise and to glory in the colorful fall foliage.

Like many trail runs, the BLTR winding through forest and meadow is challenging for its uneven footing. As the participants rounded the last corner at the Whitneyville Railroad Bridge, cheering supporters boosted any flagging spirits. With the finish line in sight and broad grins on their faces, runners and walkers alike all picked up their pace to finish well and strong. Back in the parking lot, we shared homemade stew and brownies (replenishing energy food) and cheered all of the winners and participants as they received their awards.

DCC is grateful to the Bold Coast Runners for supporting a wonderful event every year and Machias Savings Bank and Down East Community Hospital for sponsoring the event. We look forward to the same gathering next year and hope that you can join us as a participant or volunteer!
