Blueberries and Beyond: The Heath Family in Maine

May 13, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

The lowbush blueberry is arguably Maine’s most famous plant, but its many cousins are often overlooked. During this wildflower walk at Vining Lake, participants will learn about these other members of the Ericaceae or heath family. Heath family plants thrive in nutrient-poor, acidic soils and can be found all over Downeast Maine. Participants will learn some basic botanical terms as well as the family characteristics, ecology, and cultural significance of the heath family. While we will focus on heath plants, we will also look for early spring wildflowers from other plant families. This walk will be most helpful for beginners, but all levels of experience are welcome. The walk will be about a mile and half on a forest trail with tree roots and uneven ground.

Kris Paprocki is an itinerant elementary music teacher at three Washington County schools and a graduate of the Maine Master Naturalist Program. In his spare time he enjoys learning about and photographing the native plants of Maine.

Allison Paprocki teaches English Language Arts at MMHS. She graduated from the Maine Master Naturalist program and enjoys hiking, reading, and gardening.
