Description:
Middle River Park was set aside as a Community Preserve to create recreation opportunities in the Machias area. Like the Machias River Preserve, Middle River Park is also steeped in history, including a role in the Battle of the Margaretta, salt
marsh diking, farming and livestock husbandry. The Red Trail, 0.4-mile, reaches out to the heart of the salt marshes on the river. The Blue Trail, a 0.6-mile loop, explores the woodlands and old pastures. Picnic benches in the open field offer a great lunch location while watching wildlife on the river.
Trailhead Directions:
From Route 1 in Machias, across the street from Helen’s Restaurant, turn onto Kilton Lane. Cross over the Sunrise Trail and immediately turn left. Take the second right and park in the lot at the top of the hill.The trails begin atop the field. Hand-carry boat access is available below the end of the parking area.
