Youth Explorers
July 22, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Join us for hands-on nature programs, offered weekly in July part of the Lubec Community Outreach Center’s Youth Workshop Series. Sessions include a variety of activities to connect youth with the natural world including outdoor exploration, scientific inquiry, creative play, storytelling, and active fun! We’ll start each week with a story from the Lubec Memorial Library then do nature exploration. Come prepared to get messy each day, whether we walk down to the beach, play games in the field, or do a nature craft!
Limited spots available and advance registration is required. Call LCOC at (207) 733-5262 to register.
Week 1: Nature Detectives
July 8th, 12-2pm
“Become a nature detective!” Join us as we investigate nature… What was that sound? Whose footprints are these? What is this? We’ll hike the board walk in search of signs of life, listen to nature making “Sound Maps”, and create own beach tracks!
Week 2: Micro Encounters
July 15th, 12-2pm
How would it feel to be the size of a small snail? What would the view be like crawling as an ant on the ground? Where do our tiny friends live? We’ll take a look at nature up, down, over, under, near and far to imagine life on a different scale.
Week 3: Sea Creatures and Mysterious Monsters
July 22nd, 12-2pm
Who are the critters that make their homes among the rocks, sand, and seaweed? Do sea monsters really exist? Together we’ll explore the low tide, hunting for common creatures and learn about their adaptations for surviving one of our harshest ecosystems.
Week 4: Beach Birds
July 29th, 12-2pm
Sun, sea and… gulls?! Who are all the birds on the beach? How are they different from one another? We’ll walk the boardwalk and beach to look for our favorite feathered friends and learn how to begin identifying birds through their shape, size, beaks, songs, and habitat.
Each session will be 2 hours in length, beginning with lunch at noon. Participants should bring lunch, water, sunscreen, bug spray, shoes appropriate for walking and that can get wet. The activities are designed for youth aged 5-12. Participants don’t have to attend every outing.
Events may be postponed or canceled due to weather. Updates will be send to registered participants.
