On Saturday June 20th participants joined DCC’s Outreach Director Cathy for a short guided walk that ended with some amazing beach yoga. Starting in the late afternoon, the group gathered behind the Lubec School to walk down the 1,700 foot wooden boardwalk that leads to Mowry Beach.

Upon arriving on the beach the group met up with Samantha Williams the owner of Bold Coast Yoga, who was ready to help us ring in the beginning of summer with a guided yoga practice. Sam invited us take notice of the ground and sounds around us as we began to settle in our towels and mats. The beach felt cool with a strong steady breeze and a few people were out exploring the low tide or soaking in the sun.

Sam encouraged us to get comfy as Mowry Beach is made-up of many small rocks sitting on top of its sandy shoreline, so we began to wiggle into place before finding our foundations. Sam then led us through a set of basic sun salutations, encouraging us to move and reflect on the environment around us.

At the beginning we were positioned slightly downward with the slope of beach facing towards the water. Halfway through the practice the feeling of rooting down through the soles of our feet changed as we transitioned our position into an upward facing direction. Throughout the entire practice we took the time to balance ourselves and develop a deeper connection with sun and the changing of the seasons. Different variations kept things interesting and allowed our bodies to move through many ranges of motion.

The beach was a perfect place to the celebrate the season and cool down from the heat! The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, containing more hours between sunrise and sunset than any other day thus presenting us with the perfect opportunity to relax and reflect with yoga.
