Together we will make observations of coastal flooding in our community by taking photos and answering a few questions about the conditions. Details on exact meeting location will be sent to registered participants. Please register ahead of time. \nTo learn more about the project\, visit the Gulf of Maine Research Institute’s project page.

SUMMARY:Forest Camp
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, we are partnering once again with Maine Outdoor School (MOS) to host Forest Camp at the Machias River Preserve for youth ages 10-13. Campers will be able to explore and learn about the forest ecosystem through hands-on activities and games. \nActivities will range from active scavenger hunts to mindful journaling\, providing campers the opportunity to connect with each other and the natural world. Camp will become a place for discovery as we trek down the trail\, building our hiking skills and engaging in thoughtful dialogue and hands-on lessons that will spark imaginations while encouraging critical thinking. \nIf your child loves exploring nature or wants to grow their confidence outdoors\, this camp is for them! We’ll learn about the forest creatures\, grow stewardship skills\, engage in scientific inquiry\, and get messy as we step into leadership roles and into nature. \nAfter camp last year\, camper Kayleigh stated her favorite part of camp were the “Skits\, drawing\, and games” and camper Serenity noted that she learned new skills such as “Preparing for a long hike\, using field guides for identification\, Leave-No-Trace practices\, and how to be leader”. \nCamp will be held daily July 15-18. Camp is FREE but there are limited spots and advance registration is required. Registration will be run on a lottery basis to give all families a fair chance at a spot in our popular camp. Registration for the lottery is open April 1st – June 3rd. \n\nNote pre-registration does not guarantee a spot until you hear back with confirmation.\nConfirmation will be sent shortly after June 3rd.\nIf your child is not selected via the lottery process their name will automatically go onto an alternate list and you will be contacted if a participant withdraws and spot becomes available.\n\nRegister here!\nQuestions? Reach out to info@downeastcoastalconservancy.org or (207) 255-4500. \nThis program was created by a Partnership for Success Grant provided to Downeast Coastal Conservancy from Healthy Acadia.

SUMMARY:Birding and Brews
DESCRIPTION:Identifying the different species of gulls seen along Maine’s coast can seem daunting. Strengthening your gull-ability is easier than you think. We’ll start this workshop by exploring the Eastport waterfront and learning key field marks for the gulls and other seabirds that we find. Up to ten species of gulls can be seen in the Cobscook Bay area during November and December. We’ll then walk to Horn Run Brewing for food and drinks and delve deeper into gull I.D. with a slide show of helpful tips and practice photos. \nThis event will be guided by DCC Board Member and Eastport’s own Chris Bartlett. The walk will begin at 3pm – meet at the Eastport breakwater (in front of the Port Authority building)\, and the presentation at Horn Run will begin around 4:30pm.  Participants should bring binoculars and dress for the weather. \nOutdoor programs are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather\, updates will be posted here and on social media. SUMMARY:Bad Little Trail Run
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date! \n6th Annual Bad Little Trail RunSept 24th\, 2023\n \nJoin Downeast Coastal Conservancy and Bold Coast Runners and wind through the woods and along the river in this trail running event through the Machias River Preserve to celebrate conservation in our community and help raise awareness for the protection of Downeast Maine’s wild places.  The Bad Little Trail Run is named from the Passamaquoddy word “Machias” meaning Bad Little Falls in reference to the falls on the Machias river. \nBoth races start and end in Whitneyville\, followed by post-race awards and our traditional potluck food and drinks.  Your race entry fees include participation in either the 7.9 mile run or 2.5 mile run/walk as well as the post-race celebrations and awards. \nCourse Descriptions: NEW courses for 2023\nBoth races start and finish on the multi-use Downeast Sunrise Trail adjacent to the access parking lot in Whitneyville.  After about 1/4 mile on the wide and level gravel trail you cross the Machias River on the old railroad bridge where the two course split. Please read accordingly below. \nThe 2.5 mile runners and walkers  follow the Sunrise Trail for about 3/4 mile to the Homestead trail. Make a Left onto the Homestead trail climbing up to the old Homestead site. The trail is a narrow twisting\, undulating and sometimes muddy and slippery\, but well maintained\, mile of single track. A left onto the trail and the bridge gives you a 1/4 mile sprint back to the Finish. \nThe 7 mile runners After about 1/4 mile on the wide and level gravel trail you cross the Machias River on the old railroad bridge and make a sharp left turn into the woods on the Homestead Trail – a narrow twisting\, undulating and sometimes muddy and slippery\, but well maintained\, mile of single track.  After climbing to near the site of the old homestead the trail drops quickly back to the Sunrise trail. Turn left off the 0.7 mile Homestead Trail onto the Sunrise Trail  After about a 1/2mile you turn left onto the NEW Munson Pitch Trail. This single track trail twists and winds through mossy spruce fir thickets slowly climbing up to the Court Street parking lot. Following the flags through the parking lot you bear left  and pass your self serve water station. This single track trail descends quickly (just under a mile) to the Machias river.  Be careful of the bog bridging on the way down and along the river as it can be extremely slippery when wet.  Follow the trail upstream (to the right) alongside the river – with one short hilly section inland to avoid some riverside cliffs! There are a few grassy sections with hidden roots and a few mud holes to enjoy if it’s been wet. After 2.5mi miles along the river you turn RIGHT onto the Sunrise trail\, quickly turn left and after about 50ft of Sunrise Trail turn right on the Homestead trail. Following the Homestead trail in reverse (from the beginning) takes you back to to the sunrise trail and a quick right onto the Sunrise trail and the bridge gives you a 1/4 mile sprint back to the Finish. \nBoth courses are marked with blue surveyors flags which you should keep on your right at all times.  Where there are no turns you may see the odd flag for reassurance\, but if you come to a cluster of flags it means “pay attention” – there is a turn or junction. \n \n \n Register here!

You will see the different growth forms\, learn how they live and grow and even learn how they help human beings. Using a magnifying glass or hand lens you will be able to look closely at these incredible organisms. This will be an interactive time of exploring with plenty of time for questions. At the conclusion you will have the opportunity to think about what  you found to be the most interesting thing you learned about lichens. \nThis event will be led by Maine Master Naturalist Grace Bartlett at Klondike Mountain Preserve in Lubec. \nEmail cathy@downeastcoastalconservancy.org to register. \nOutdoor programs are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather\, updates will be sent to registered participants.
